The Sultan of Brunei, in particular, is known for his extravagant car purchases, which have included everything from Rolls-Royce station wagons to custom Ferrari models.
During the 1990s, as many high-end automakers struggled financially, the Brunei Royal Family’s lavish car orders played a significant role in helping keep some brands afloat. This led to the creation of highly-specialized, one-of-a-kind cars, many of which influenced the designs, technologies, and performance features of later production vehicles. Some of these vehicles, such as the Ferrari Mythos, have even left a lasting impact on the automotive world.
The Ferrari Mythos, for example, was a concept car unveiled at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show. Featuring the same 390-horsepower, 4.9L flat-twelve engine and rear-wheel-drive configuration as the Ferrari Testarossa, it was a stunning example of Ferrari’s design prowess. Although initially intended as a concept, the Sultan of Brunei commissioned three Mythos models—one red, one black, and one eccentric purple with a blue leather interior. These versions were modified from the original convertible design to include fixed roofs and right-hand drive configurations, making them unique additions to the collection.
