Lucid is following in the footsteps of its American startup rival, Rivian, by planning a smaller, more affordable EV for release in 2026. This new model will include cutting-edge powertrain technology, marking the next chapter in Lucid’s journey as an EV manufacturer. Several major announcements were made during Lucid’s Technology & Manufacturing Day in September 2024, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and growth.
One key announcement was the adoption of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, set to roll out in 2025. This will enable Lucid vehicles to charge at Tesla’s Supercharger network and other charging stations operated by initiatives like Electrify America and FLO. With several automakers already pledging to adopt NACS, this move aims to create a more standardized and convenient charging infrastructure for EV owners across North America.
Lucid also revealed its new Atlas Drive unit, which builds on the company’s existing motor technology that has helped the Lucid Air sedan achieve an impressive 500 miles of EPA-rated range per charge. The Atlas drive unit is designed to be more compact, freeing up interior space in future models while improving efficiency. It promises to offer greater range with lower energy consumption and fewer battery requirements—though Lucid has yet to release detailed specifications, as the unit is still undergoing testing and development.
These announcements highlight Lucid’s ambition to continue evolving as a leader in the EV market, with an emphasis on enhancing vehicle performance, improving charging infrastructure, and expanding its range of models for a wider audience. The new powertrain technologies and platform developments are likely to be key differentiators for Lucid as it competes with other luxury and mainstream EV manufacturers.
